Pocket Primary Care 2nd Edition, Second Edition, provides easy access to quick answers in the outpatient setting to common diagnostic questions. Easy-to-use and loose-leaf resource contains expert guidance and current evidence from Massachusetts General Hospital physicians including appropriate workups. This revised second edition covers everything from insomnia counseling to diagnosing STIs to treating osteoporosis. It supports clinical decision making and guides your practice to success.
The first edition of Pocket Primary Care finally arrived at a time when this work is needed. In collaboration with the staff of the Massachusetts General Hospital, it presented concise and useful information on topics including chronic pain and incontinence, using evidence-based practices.
Pocket Primary Care extends the tradition of the Pocket Medicine handbook by understanding that information is most useful when accessed and understood at the right time.
Pocket Primary Care 2nd Edition became a valuable addition to the toolkit of primary care physicians after this. In this new edition, there are significant updates to help keep this invaluable tool relevant for primary care practitioners. It is with great gratitude that we acknowledge the excellent team that assembled the second edition of Pocket Primary Care and their dedication to this important project.
POCKET PRIMARY CARE 2ND EDITION PREFACE
It is more important to determine what kind of patient has a disease than what type of disease the patient has, according to Sir William Osler more than a century ago. In an era of specialized medicine, primary care can seem out-of-date or anachronistic. Practice it first. No matter how much training you have or what nature of your practice is, being a person’s primary illustrates the fundamental nature of this relationship. A changing field is the team-based care model, population health, and medical homes as well as the evolving use of electronic health records. Innovative solutions are being introduced to cater to these new demands, but primary care providers will never be undervalued in terms of their importance for patients, their families, their communities, and themselves.
Pocket Primary Care 2nd Edition updates
Pocket Primary Care 2nd Edition was founded as a support service for those practicing in ambulatory settings-to acknowledge the full spectrum of care provided in these settings, ranging from counseling patients on insomnia to diagnosing
STIs, to interpreting
PFTs to treating osteoporosis. This second edition is filled with many updates to clinical practice, guidelines, and research.
It represents the brainchild of dozens of physicians from the MGH diaspora, and we hope that this edition will improve the lives of its readers and their patients when combined with sound clinical judgment. In order to create this book, its contributors have worked tirelessly on weekends and nights, to devise the best way to express their wisdom.
We are deeply grateful to these experts. The two doctors who envisioned this project even when it was just a mere idea in the minds of their trainees,
Dr. Valerie Stone and
Dr. Hasan Bazari, deserve our thanks, too.
Our success
Our success has been made possible by the encouragement and leadership of Dr. Katrina Armstrong and
Dr. Josh Metlay, as well as the mentorship provided to us by
Dr. Marc Sabatine. We are forever grateful to them, as well as to the larger MGH community for the value they place on primary care and their belief in the capabilities and responsibilities of their members.
