About the Authors

GERALD GRAFF - CATHY BIRKENSTEIN

GERALD GRAFF, Emeritus Professor of English and Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the 2008 President of the Modern Language Association of America, has had a major impact on teachers through such books as Professing Literature: An Institutional History, Beyond the Culture Wars: How Teaching the Conflicts Can Revitalize American Education, and Clueless in Academe: How Schooling Obscures the Life of the Mind. The Common Core State Standards for K–12 cite his work on the importance of argument literacy for college and career readiness.

CATHY BIRKENSTEIN, a lecturer at the University of Illinois at Chicago, has published essays on writing, most recently in College English, and, with Gerald, in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Academe, and College Composition and Communication. She and Gerald have given over a hundred lectures and workshops at colleges, conferences, and high schools—and are at present working on a book contending that our currently confusing school and college curriculum needs to be clarified by making the practice of argument the common thread across all disciplin

LAURA J. PANNING DAVIES

LAURA J. PANNING DAVIES, who coedited the readings in this book, is professor of English and associate director of Writing Programs at SUNY Cortland. Her research, focused on writing program administration and student composing processes, has been published in Composition Studies, Composition Forum, and WPA: Writing Program Administration. She teaches courses in first-year writing, writing pedagogy, public rhetoric, and technical writing. She’s been the editor of the blog for “They Say / I Say” for the past several years, the author of the Instructor’s Manual, and is a frequent speaker in Norton’s professional development programs

RUSSEL DURST

RUSSEL DURST, who coedited the readings in this book, is a professor of English at the University of Cincinnati, where he teaches courses in composition, writing pedagogy and research, English linguistics, and the Hebrew Bible as literature. A past president of the National Conference on Research in Language and Literacy, he is the author of several books, including Collision Course: Conflict, Negotiation, and Learning in College Composition.
